Jesus asked Nicodemus: “If I have told you about Earthly things, and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about Heavenly things?”
John 3:12
Notes for Contemplation as You Use this Devotional:
- In this mystical passage, from the section often titled, “Jesus and Nicodemus,” by the Gospel Writer called John, Nicodemus grapples with his beliefs. He visits Jesus at night so others won’t know what he’s doing. This is a literal leap of faith to discover greater spiritual maturity.
- Jesus encourages Nicodemus to behold his own divinity, the God’s essence—soul power—within him. Although Nicodemus doubts himself, he recognizes Jesus’s spiritual mastery. So, he’s willing to explore what his life could be if he relinquishes the perspective that prevents him from knowing the Truth of who he is.
- Earthly things include your personal understanding and intellectual knowledge, as well as your property and possessions.Heavenly things include your spiritual illumination and intuition, such as discerning your life direction and how you want to express your creativity.
- Your beliefs and intentions, whether positive or negative, have energy, and they work as you direct them. In his 1963 book, Soul Power, longtime Unity minister, teacher, and writer, Rev. Ernest C. Wilson teaches: “What you become is . . . the result of your belief in yourself, in God within you, [and] in your soul power.” He assures you that you can do anything you want “through the power that is within you, if only you stir . . . that power into activity.”
- Demonstration is your evidence of how well your life works. When you choose to examine your beliefs, your aren’t spiritually bypassing challenges. You are looking at them—and yourself—from a new perspective so you can experience the world around you differently.
