Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well, “God is Spirit, and those who worship God worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24
Notes for Contemplation as You Use this Devotional:
- This mystical passage by the Gospel Writer called John, from the story often called “Jesus and the Samaritan Woman,” is the culmination of a theological (spiritual) conversation. Here, Jesus appeals to the woman’s sense of holiness, rather than her intellect, as evidenced by the imagery of God (Higher Power, Divine Spirit, Supreme Being, etc.) as living water that nourishes everyone.
- Jesus is a mystic, master teacher, healer, and wayshower for multitudes because he fully embodies and radiates his absolute divinity. He aligns himself with God and knows his divine heritage, embracing his role as the Christ, the greatest expression of his perfect soul self.
- Jesus knows that God is not a ruler on a throne to be placated, cajoled, or appeased. He doesn’t worship (revere) God because God requires it, but because he understands God as the only presence and power, the divine life energy (essence) of all that is.
- To inspire means to ignite, enlighten, and awaken. Many cultures believe that God literally breathes—inspires—life into all beings. The Samaritan woman is inspired by Jesus, not because he is God, but because he most clearly represents the divine oneness God has with all creation.
- Unity Minister Rev. William Earle Cameron teaches that to know God, you must “practice the presence of God” because “God lives in your life, . . . in your consciousness (mindset).” He reminds you that “if your mind is closed, you will find God nowhere.” So you must “open your mind and . . . discover that God is truly everywhere.”
- Demonstration is your evidence of how well your life works. God is revealed to you and through you, based on your understanding. Your greatest theological mistake is trying to create or understand God as if God were a superhero with human qualities. God isn’t a superhero. But the superhero consciousness is active within you because you’re inspired, filled with divine life energy. When you realize that you’re created in God’s image—and not the other way around—all possibilities are available to you.
Contemplation Questions:
As you reflect on your life and circumstances, ask yourself:
- In what ways is God my living water, no matter what’s occurring in my life?
- List, word map, or illustrate all the ways.
- What are at least three (3) ways I see God in my life now?
- List, word map, or illustrate all the ways.
- What are at least three (3) ways I can practice the presence of God?
- List, word map, or illustrate all you imagine.
As you use this devotional, appeal to your own inner holiness. Honor yourself and your wellbeing by breathing deeply. Notice and appreciate your surroundings. Know that you are always one with God, even if you aren’t yet feeling the oneness. Keep your eyes, ears, mind, and heart open. Trust that wherever you go, wherever you are, God is there.
