Jesus taught:
“Anyone who hears my words,
and puts them into practice
. . . is like one who builds a house
by laying their foundation on a rock.
When floods come and torrents crash against that house,
they cannot shake it, because that house is well built.”
Luke 6:47-48
Some Ideas to Contemplate:
- Jesus, Master Mystic, Healer, Teacher, and Wayshower explains to his followers—and us—that our spiritual practice must have a solid foundation. To Jesus, God (Higher Power, Supreme Divine Energy, Great Spirit, etc.) is that foundation, for without God as our source and sustenance, we are on shaky ground, apt to become disconnected from our true soul self and sacred life purpose.
- Sometimes, when we begin our spiritual journeys, we may focus too much on theories and ideologies, thinking that more study will help us live better and find fulfillment. We may become disillusioned and disappointed that all our knowledge has not helped us, for example, heal our ailments, improve our poor job performance, or resolve our unhealthy relationships.
- Yet, Jesus did not want his followers to merely learn the spiritual practices. He wanted them to apply those practices in their daily lives, so even in turbulent times, they felt peace of mind and contentment sharing their purpose. In fact, neuroscience now proves what Jesus taught: a grounded spiritual practice leads to a longer lifespan, more loving relationships, and better overall health, including minimizing depression and loneliness.
- Sure footing in life is not necessarily gained from all the knowledge and experience we acquire, but in how well we integrate what we know. We can choose to refine our character to more fully express our divine nature. Along the way, we can discard all that we are not and keep moving ahead on our own perfect path.
Practices for the Week:
- Remember: You are a spiritual being with a radiant soul, living in a sacred body temple, having human experiences.
- Reflect on any ways you live on shaky ground.
- Illustrate, journal, and/or record your most valuable knowledge and experience.
- Then discern some ways to integrate your wisdom into your life now.
