Knowing the thoughts of his detractors, after he healed a demon-possessed man, Jesus said, “Every kingdom divided against itself will fall.  And no city or house divided against itself can stand.  . . . If I heal demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Matthew 12:25, 28

Notes for Contemplation as You Use this Devotional:

  • This mystical passage by the Gospel Writer called Matthew is often called “A House Divided.” It’s one of many ways Jesus explains his divinity, abilities, and supreme spiritual understanding.
  • Jesus is a mystic, master teacher, healer, and wayshower for multitudes because he fully embodies and embraces his absolute divinity. He’s fully conscious of what God can do through him, because he opens himself to feel God’s essence (the Christ) within him. He also honors his intuition, the subtle, still, small voice of God within. He teaches his followers that they have this same intuitive connection (attunement) with God and can serve the wellbeing of all, just as he does.
  • While this passage has been quoted to specifically address civil, cultural, or family conflict, it’s also about your own personal thoughts and mindset (consciousness). If you’re divided against yourself and can’t align your thinking and feeling natures, you’re as much in conflict with yourself as any nation.
  • The “demon” that must be healed isn’t necessarily a mental illness. You may be “possessed” by negative thoughts of doubt, fear, frustration, jealousy, loneliness, or rage, which cause you to behave in unhealthy, unfulfilling ways.
  • Unity Minister Rev. David L. Schumacher taught that your thoughts matter. He said: “You have been given the privilege of thinking whatever you want. But also, you are charged with the responsibility of demonstrating what you think.” So, if you’re unhappy about something, “the solution, very simply and bluntly stated, is to change your thoughts. You are not a puppet on a string; you have freedom of choice and free will, so recognize this and use it to your advantage.”
  • Demonstration is your evidence of how well your life works. To change your life, you must change your thoughts about it, because energy is matter, and you demonstrate as your energy flows. So, stop affirming the struggle (demon) of “I have to figure this out” and relax into knowing “I’m being shown what’s best for me now.”

Contemplation Questions:

As you reflect on your life and circumstances, ask yourself:

  • What negative thoughts (demons) are troubling me now?
    • List, word map, or illustrate the thoughts.
  • When I listen to the negative thoughts, what are they really telling me?
    • List, word map, or illustrate the real message.
  • What are at least three (3) ways I can heal and transform my thoughts?
    • List, word map, or illustrate all you imagine.

Use this devotional anytime you want to transform your thinking.  By learning to tune out negativity and trust your intuition, you can begin to change your life.  Be gentle with yourself and treat yourself with loving, tender care as you allow new, positive, healthy thoughts to flow.  Remember that the kingdom of God, within you and around you, is one of peace and plenty.  Trust your intuition to guide you to that awesome place.
