They who dwell in the shelter of the Most High
who live in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord,
“My refuge and my fortress, my God, in which I trust.”
Psalm 91:1-2
Some Ideas to Contemplate:
- This passage from the 91st Psalm assures us that wherever we are, no matter what may occur in us or around us, God (Higher Power, Supreme Energy, etc.) is there. This Psalm, one of the Bible’s most popular, has several different titles including: “Security of One Who Trusts in the Lord”; “Assurance of God’s Protection”; “God Is With You”; and “God is My Refuge,” among others. The Psalmist assures us that anytime we feel doubtful and insecure we can find refuge—peace and protection—in the Only Power and Presence in the Universe, the Lord, God, our Source, Substance, and Sustenance.
- Security is feeling safe and protected (unthreatened) physically, mentally, and emotionally. Often, when we feel insecure, we’re focused on a situation out of our control, like another person’s behavior or the financial markets. Our sense of security also may be based on our view of God, as well as our personal experience of life. Many of us have redefined security because of trauma, illness, or upset we’ve experienced.
- Spiritually secure people feel at one with God. Even when outer events create uncertainty, they affirm God’s presence. They have hope in a positive outcome, however it unfolds. They take courageous steps to do what is best at the appropriate time. They maintain peace of mind and trust their intuition—inner wisdom—to guide them. They’re secure in knowing that they can rely on themselves and God’s presence with and within them.
Practices for the Week:
- Set your intention and focus your energy so you have refuge from turmoil and uncertainty.
- Notice what or whom you’re trying to control and gently release those efforts.
- Illustrate, journal, and/or record all the ways you feel secure in yourself and your Higher Power, however you define it.
You are a spiritual being with a radiant soul, living in a sacred body temple, having human experiences. Know that you can feel secure by connecting with your depth of faith. Honor your intuition so you can discern what’s best for you now. Then trust where you’re going, even if others choose a different path.
