God says to the Prophet:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;
I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”

Ezekiel 36:26

Some Ideas to Contemplate:

  • In sacred scripture, whenever a prophet appears, we are encouraged to view life from a new perspective.  Ezekiel shares a message to assure the children of Israel—and us—that we are divine creations of God (Higher Power, Divine Presence, Supreme Being Energy, etc.), fully imbued with God’s essence, sometimes called our spark of divinity.
  • A new heart and spirit symbolize spiritual transformation.  Having a heart of flesh, rather than stone, means living from Spirit first.  This awareness helps us experience God, not as a capricious puppeteer who must be managed or appeased, but as our Source and Sustenance, embracing us in Unconditional Love, Infinite Compassion, and Everlasting Grace, as close to us as our breath.
  • To fully live from within first, we must recognize that our spiritual maturity and emotional health are inextricably linked.  Spiritual maturity, the recognition of our true soul selves, deepens as we soften our hearts and transform our character.  Our emotional health, an aspect of our overall wellbeing, regulates our emotions, guides us in understanding our feelings, and supports our equanimity during life’s highs and lows.
  • For many in our fast-paced world, only attending religious services or joining a spiritual organization is insufficient to experience God’s presence or know our own hearts.  For example, we can pray hard, say tons of “Hail Marys,” or put thousands of dollars in the collection plate.  But if we still go home and kick the dog, scream at our partner, or neglect our responsibilities, we are not living fully from our divinity.  Softening our hearts lets us gently integrate our spiritual and emotional selves so we also can vitalize the physical, intellectual, and social aspects of our lives and better express our divine nature.

Practices for the Week:

  • Remember: You are a spiritual being with a radiant soul, living in a sacred body temple, having human experiences.
  • Reflect on how you may be disconnected from Spirit.
  • Illustrate, journal, and/or record any affect this has on your emotions.
  • Then discern a few gentle ways you can better feel and express your divinity.
